Bogotá traffic can be intense, so allow generous time between reservations. A journey that appears close on a map can take considerably longer during peak hours.

The Bogotá Safety Edit
Bogotá is improving in several official security indicators, but improvement does not mean the absence of risk.
Personal theft reports fell by 5.7% during 2025, and authorities reported an 18% year-on-year reduction in personal theft during the first part of 2026. The city’s 2025 victimization survey still found that 14.9% of respondents had been victims of at least one crime. 
The correct tone is not fear. It is controlled awareness.
Carry less
Use a small crossbody bag with a zipper, worn in front of the body. Avoid large backpacks in crowded places and do not keep phones or wallets in outer pockets.
Keep the phone discreet
Do not leave it on restaurant tables near entrances or use it carelessly beside the street. Step inside a business before checking directions or arranging transportation.
Protect your drink
Never leave a drink unattended. Do not accept an already-open drink from a stranger, and do not continue consuming a drink that tastes or feels unusual.
The U.S. Embassy has specifically warned about crimes involving sedatives, including scopolamine—known locally as burundanga—and recommends heightened caution in bars, nightclubs and social encounters. 
No reliable current citywide “scopolamine rate” was available from an official Bogotá source, so the guide should not invent a percentage. It is better to cite the official warnings and give useful prevention advice.
Separate your valuables
Carry one payment card rather than every card you own. Keep backup funds, passport and secondary devices secured at the accommodation whenever appropriate.
